Welcome fellow basketball officials!!

I hope that all of my fellow officials are off to a good start this officiating season. We certainly have a lot of knowledge and on-court ability within our group that deserves to be shared and celebrated. We are also very busy and need a forum where we can discuss our concerns and questions 24/7. For these reasons and more, I have created this blog as a place to share our passion for officiating, miscellaneous knotty problems, rules expertise, mechanics, game experiences, and concerns/suggestions for our local association. In the sidebar to the right is a section called Blogroll containing a list of websites for your convenience.

Despite the temptation to make this blog a catalog of war stories, we must not use this space to do so. Anyone can read and post to this blog. Improper comments or commentary/heresay would be unprofessional so please leave names, locations, and what someone said to you in your own personal memory. There is no need to argue over rules here either. We can search out official interpretations and post them here for the world to see. Our “Official Interpretations” category is reserved for this purpose.

Potential areas of conversation:

Continued reflection upon our games and discussions on the ride to and from games discussing situations (no need to even share what ruling you made);

What you learned at a recent game;

Interesting situations that occurred or almost occurred challenging our rule knowledge;

Rules needing further clarification;

Sharing concerns about our duties and how we perform those duties;

Thoughts to help with the design of the new ratings system;

Upload video and share interpretations of the action;

Sharing concerns/suggestions for our association; and more.

Your anecdotal stories of positive experiences (leaving out names and locations of course) will remind us of why we engage and accept the challenge, fun, and sometimes limited reward of officiating sports.

Your suggestions on how we might better serve one another and our local, state, federal, and international organizations would be another great way to use this space. Learning is stifled when a person not in attendance retells a situation so please share your own story before the story gets changed and embellished. Blog away.

Since we are all educators when we are on the court, let’s at least take a bit of extra time here to further improve our sports officiating. What a great way for Maine to continue to lead the IAABO officiating world!

Note: This blog is available to anyone who goes online including coaches, players, and spectators so please make sure to be professional.
